JUNIORS

It’s that time of year again - summer reading time!

As upcoming juniors, you will be reading The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. You must finish reading the novel and prepare for a test to be given in your English class on Monday, September 28, 2020. In addition to reading the novel, you will find a set of study guide questions here on the English department’s website. Although completion of all study questions is not required, completed study questions can be utilized as a reference tool when completing your Summer Reading Test. A link to the study guide questions can be found under the additional resources tab at the top of the page.

Copies of the book are available at your local library, at all local book retailers, and at online book retailers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc. The UCT library will have several ebook copies available to sophomore students via OverDrive. Additionally, the UCT English department will have a limited number of copies available for loan, along with the audiobook version of the novel. If you need assistance accessing the novel, please get in touch with Mr. Hill as outlined below.

PLEASE NOTE: Junior Honors students have a separate summer reading assignment that will be distributed directly to students enrolled in those classes. If you are going into junior honors and did not receive this assignment, please get in touch with Ms. Smith at msmith@uppercapetech.org. A copy of the Junior Honors assignment can also be found under the honors assignments tab at the top of this page.

TEST AND FIRST TERM WORK:

On September 28, 2020, students will complete a multiple-choice test on their summer reading assignment. This test will be worth 15% of students’ first term grades, so it is especially important that reading is completed on time. In addition to the test, junior English classes will utilize the novel as part of their work during the first term. Students will be expected to be intimately familiar with the novel so that they can participate in class discussions, write narratives, and work together with other students in the classroom over the course of first term.

TWITTER:
The English Department encourages all students to set up a Twitter account to use exclusively for school-related business. Students and parents are welcome to follow the English Department’s Twitter feed @UCTEnglish for the latest department news and summer reading information. We also follow many of the authors represented in our Summer Reading Assignments. It’s really interesting to follow their posts, their personal observations, their jokes, etc.

QUESTIONS:
ALL questions should be directed to the Department Chairperson, Mr. Andrew Hill. Please feel free to send an email to ahill@uppercapetech.org anytime throughout the summer. You can also reach Mr. Hill through his Twitter account @MrHillUCT.
