Welcome to Upper Cape Tech! We are so excited you’ve chosen to become a member of the UCT family. Ready or not, this is your first official high school assignment.
Like the vast majority of high schools, UCT requires all students to complete a Summer Reading Assignment. As an incoming freshman, you will be reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. You must finish reading the novel and prepare for an open note/open book test scheduled to be given in your English class on Friday, September 20, 2024. Study questions will be posted on the English Department’s website. You are not required to answer the study questions, however, you are encouraged to complete them because the study questions may be utilized as a reference tool when completing your Summer Reading Test. Study questions will be available on the UCT English Department’s website, www.uctenglish.com, beginning in early June. If you would prefer a hard copy of the study questions, please see Ms. DeChristopher, the English Department Teacher-Leader, during your Summer Transition Program. You may borrow a copy of the novel from your local library or purchase a copy through local retailers or online book retailers such as Amazon or Barnes & Noble. Students will receive instructions to access the audiobook during the Summer Transition Program. If you need assistance accessing the novel, please get in touch with Ms. DeChristopher. |
TEST AND FIRST TERM WORK:
On September 20, 2024, all 9th-grade students will complete a multiple-choice test on their summer reading novel. This test is worth 15% of students’ Term 1 grade, so it is especially important that reading is completed by the start of the school year. In addition to the test, freshman English classes reference the novel as part of their lessons during Term 1. You will be expected to be familiar with the novel so that you can participate in class discussions, write narratives, and work together with other students in the classroom throughout Term 1.
