It’s that time of year again - summer reading time!
As upcoming seniors, you will be reading a book from the following list to complete for summer reading. Each English teacher in the department has chosen a book that they recommend reading for those students signed up for particular course electives for senior year. These novels will come into play in the class throughout the year, so reading your class novel will be beneficial! You must finish reading the novel and prepare for a test on that novel to be given in your English class on Friday, September 26, 2025. You are not required to keep a reading journal, but you may find it to be a useful reference tool when completing your Summer Reading Test. A recommended journal format can be found under the additional resources tab at the top of this page.

PLEASE NOTE: Many of the Summer Reading books assigned to the rising Senior class contain mature subject matter. Several books include realistic fiction that explores topics such as racism, mental illness, and violence, to name a few. Additionally, non-fiction choices explore random acts of senseless violence.
Copies of these books are available at your local library, at all local book retailers, and at online book retailers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc. The UCT library will have several ebook copies available to senior students where possible via OverDrive. Additionally, the UCT English Department will have a limited number of copies available for loan, along with applicable audiobook versions of the novel. If you need assistance accessing the novel, please get in touch with Ms. DeChristopher as outlined below.
PLEASE NOTE: AP Literature students have a separate summer reading assignment that will be distributed directly to students enrolled in those classes. If you are going into AP and did not receive this assignment, please get in touch with Ms. DeChristopher at [email protected]. A copy of the AP assignment can also be found under the honors assignments tab at the top of this page.

TEST AND FIRST TERM WORK:
On September 26, 2025, students will complete a multiple-choice test on their summer reading assignment. This test will be worth 15% of students’ Term 1 grades, so it is especially important that reading is completed on time.
QUESTIONS:
ALL questions should be directed to the Department Teacher-Leader, Ms. Michelle DeChristopher. Please feel free to send an email to [email protected] anytime throughout the summer.
